Te Aurere was the first waka hourua built in Aotearoa in the modern era. While there was a design from Hawai’i, Hokule’a had been built in glass fibre, so construction of Te Aurere in Kauri presented new challenges. These included developing a strong way to lock together the main crossbeams and the hulls (see “Main lashings” photo below); and dealing with the inevitable variations and knots in the wood. Hekenukumai’s success is measured in the way the waka has handled with aplomb the difficult conditions around the coast and out on the ocean. Click here for a diagram of the waka.
