Starting with Mataatua Puhi in 1990, Hekenukumai has built 27 waka. This includes ten in Hawai’i at the annual Festival of Canoes held on Maui every May, at which he has been carving waka since 1999.

Hekenukumai has also substantially overhauled a number of waka including, most recently, Ngatokimatawhaorua (Otaua) and Mataatua Toi (Whakatane) in 2010.
