Te Aurere broadcasts its position when sailing using GPS, a notebook computer and a satelite phone.  The readings of latitude and longiotude are processed using the “Waka Tracker” software developed by Bartholemew Joy which displays the route the waka has sailed on Google Maps.  This information is not shared with the navigator on the waka on ocean voyages who must determine the waka’s postiion and course using traditional wayfinding skills.  Paper and digital charts are used for coastal sailing in the interests of safety of the waka and crew.
