“Te Aurere’s” maiden voyage in 1992 was a return trip from Mangonui to Rarotonga, Cook Islands, for the South Pacific Arts Festival. Since then the waka has visited Tahiti, the Marquesas Islands, Hawai’i, Cook Islands (for a second time), Norfolk Island (twice) and the Isle of Pines in New Caledonia. “Te Aurere” has also completed four circumnavigations of Te Ika a Maui (North Island), most recently over the summer of 2008-9, as well as countless local sails from Mangonui, Auckland and Tauranga.
In 2012-13 Te Aurere and Ngahiraka Mai Tawhiti made the epic return voyage between Aotearoa and Rapanui (Easter Island) leaving Auckland on 17th August 2012 and returning to Doubtless Bay on 18th May 2013 covering over 10,000 Nautical Miles in the process.
